April is the time for spring trout on Lake Ontario in shallow water. A temperature gauge is one of the most important tools, as salmonoids are very temperature sensitive. you should be looking for muddy or slightly stained water, as this water is slightly warmer than clear water. Early on, you should be fishing 3-10 feet of water. The fish are naturally spooky, so use planer boards with long leads and short billed lures designed to run no more than 3 feet deep. If the water is stained, use 50/10 SpiderWire with 30/6 leaders, as the bottom is covered with rocks. The line is strong enough to straighten the hooks instead of breaking off the lure. If the water is clearer, you should switch leaders to fluorocarbon leaders. The planer board is 200# test SpiderWire. The thin diameter helps the release clips slide down to the proper position. Small lures are the norm for Spring. Gold and fluorescent orange, and chartreuse are the hottest lures on the lake. You can also take the front hooks off lures that have two sets of trebles.
